Pre-Radiologic Sciences
Pre-Radiologic Sciences
Â鶹´«Ã½ does not have a radiologic sciences program. These programs can be pursued at other institutions at the associate’s or bachelor’s level. On a case by case basis, starting at Â鶹´«Ã½ and transferring to another institution may be an option for select students.
As a radiological scientist or MRI technologist, you'll perform diagnostic imaging examinations, such as x-rays, on patients or operate magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners to create diagnostic images.
In Mississippi, there are two primary pathways for radiological sciences, each with their own benefits.
- Â鶹´«Ã½/UMMC (B.S.): Choose this pathway and 2 years after completing the prerequisite coursework at Â鶹´«Ã½, you can enter into (UMMC)’s Bachelor's Degree program in dental hygiene for the other 2 years.
- Â鶹´«Ã½/PRCC (A.S.): You may choose to attend a junior or community college and receive an associate degree in dental hygiene. The closest community college offering such a program is (PRCC) at their Hattiesburg campus. This allows you to begin working in their field earlier and generally requires fewer prerequisites, but with a limited academic background.
Navigating the Application Process
Beginning early with the application process allows students to structure an academic plan of study. Radiological Science programs do not admit based on course prerequisites and GPA alone. RS programs also have a series of additional requirements, including ACT scores, meeting technical standards required in the field like motor skills, visual acuity, and communication ability, and providing evidence of care for people through service and shadowing experiences in a clinical setting.
