Bio
Alan M. Shiller is Bennett Distinguished Professor in the Sciences and Director of the Center for Trace Analysis: I'm an aqueous geochemist in Â鶹´«Ã½'s Division of Marine Science located at Stennis Space Center (~75 miles S of Hattiesburg). Work in my lab goes on in various environments from alpine rivers to the coastal zone to the open ocean. We study dissolved trace metals, methane, nutrients, O2, radium and radon. In the open ocean, we participate in the international GEOTRACES program, looking at sections of dissolved trace elements across major ocean basins. In the coastal zone, we’re particularly interested in submarine groundwater discharge, a major, but hidden, route of material input to the ocean. Our river work focuses on understanding what controls concentrations of dissolved trace elements and what this tells us about watershed processes.
